The Hand Book references patent No 549,160 which was granted to George Baldwin Selden in 1895, and the Electric Vehicle Company subsequently purchased the rights to in 1899. The Patent was basically used to bilk money from gasoline automobile makers by having them pay patent fees and threatening patent infringement suits if they did not.

Ford disagreed with the legitimacy of the Patent and as such Selden and the Electric Vehicle Company sued Ford Motor Company for patent infringement in 1903. The case continued until 1911. The patent was already set to expire in 1912. Some patent reform came about as a result of the suit.
